I got started with animal chiropractic because the current veterinary curriculum does not teach much, if anything, about the axial skeleton or musculature, which leaves a large part of the animal untreated. I was fortunate to spend some time with veterinarians certified in animal chiropractic and saw the difference it made in those patients as far as overall health, comfort and pain. After that I decided I wanted to be certified in order to be able to offer my patients a holistic, non-invasive approach to musculoskeletal and neurologic issues.
Animal Chiropractic has allowed me to educate my clients and the community about animal chiropractic - what it is, what it is not. It has also allowed me to demonstrate the differences between someone who is a LEGAL certified animal chiropractor with proper training by the AVCA or IVCA and an ILLEGAL lay person who performs "spinal manipulation" without proper training or education that don't fix the problem, but are "cheaper". "If you think experts are expensive, wait and see what amateurs will cost you".
I have so many big wins with animal chiropractic, but for me I think it's about the relationship it allows me to build with my patients and clients to offer them continued non-invasive solutions to keep them pain-free and performing at their best.
I mostly work on horses, but I got to adjust a Bongo and a Yellow-backed Duiker at the zoo a few times - that has been really cool.
Don't wait until there's an obvious issue before coming to a certified animal chiropractor. It's not about the quick fix, but keeping the animal aligned so they can function at their best and address their compensatory patterns to hopefully keep them from continuing to have the same misalignments and issues going forward.
