ICA Diplomate for Animal Chiropractic
Welcome to the ICA’s Council for Animal Chiropractic course selection site.
This diplomate program is minimum of 360+ hours.
The first 200 hours will be the completion of a basic animal chiropractic program recognized by the AVCA and the passage of the test given by the Animal Chiropractic Certification Commission (ACCC). AVCA certification is the first step to becoming a DC with a diplomate in Animal Chiropractic (DAC). Some programs are more hours but the ICA is counting the basic AVCA certification as 200 hours. If a doctor is IVCA certified they may apply and pass the certification exam given by the ACCC to become AVCA certified.
The remaining 160 hours will be split into 2 programs of 80 hours each. Participants will be given 2 years to finish each part of the program. These 80 hours must be provided by and administered by an AVCA recognized program in coordination with and co-sponsored by the ICA Council on Animal Chiropractic. Each part of these hours will be approved by the ICA Council on Animal Chiropractic’s Committee of Continuing Education and Curriculum.
The courses selected by the participant will include at least one item from each of the following categories:

The curriculum is comprehensive but structured and based on the science, art and philosophy of chiropractic. These are not stand alone seminars, but designed to be interrelated. The subject areas covered in the syllabus include all aspects of animal chiropractic. Each participant may decide to select predominantly one species of animal to specialize in. However, since the basic programs specialize in canine and equine anatomy and physiology, each participant must take at least 10 hours of food animal adjusting safety and at least 10 hours of animal skeletal anatomy outside of the dog and horse anatomy taught in the basic program.
The practicing Doctor of Chiropractic certified in Animal Chiropractic will acquire greater skills and competencies in a wide range of evaluative, diagnostic, assessment and treatment procedures as well as advanced adjustment skills for all species. Included in the curriculum are expanded modules on radiology, nutrition, sports injuries, orthopedics, developmental and functional neurology, and safety of both the patient, doctor and owner.
At least one program must include pathology and current veterinary medical diagnosis allowing the doctor to be able to communicate with owners and veterinarians about applying chiropractic to current problems.
Instructors must be approved by the ICA Council of Animal Chiropractic and will be Animal Chiropractors with extensive practice experience and/or teaching experience at the undergrad or postgraduate level. Having instructors with the right expertise ensures the DC is getting the best education possible in that subject.
